I have an old epson 1280 13x19 ink jet that i acquired 6 or 7 years ago during a serious photography kick. I have printed maps on 13x19 ink jet paper and 11x17 adventure paper and both work great...I have been looking for sources of 13x19 waterproof paper as national geo does not go that large. 13x19 is just large enough that you cant print out usgs quads (available free online) and have them be somewhat readable.

Some nicer photo printers use pigment ink which is more water and uv resistant then standard ink. The 1280 uses standard ink but tou can also get kits to refill cartridges with pigment ink or install a continuos inking system which feeds from large bottles and uses pigment ink. I've thought about doing this but there are only so many hours in the day.

A big/nice photo printer is also awesome for printing out photos from trips as decorations, gifts etc.

I've exclusively used Acme Mapper to get my topos for a few years now. Free, and easy to use. I'll generally do a zoomed in part of the aspects I'll ski/climb on one side and a more broad view of the area with surrounding peaks for compass bearing purposes on the other. An 8x11 print fits nicely into one of those storage size freezer ziplock bags and tucks into a gaitor nice. Since it's in the bag it really doesn't matter what you print it with. I've used color ink jet, bubble jet and laser and never had a problem with any of them.

Works for me...and best of all it's basically free!
