If you don't know how to already (or aren't very good at it), my first word of advice is to master kick turns on switchbacks in skin tracks (i.e. uphill travel).  I see so many people get worked/overexerted from not knowing this fundamental/vital aspect of any type of touring (i.e. slackcountry or ski mountaineering).  In fact I was involved in 2 incidents recently (with 3 different people) where this became a factor in the overall trip.  If you don't know of anybody who does it well, or has the patience to teach, I highly suggest taking a class from Mr. Martin Volken, himself.

Splitboards are good tools in the right conditions, but why not just ski then??

Have fun, no matter what you use.

because skiing is a sin ;)

cornRIDE, many of us who ski are embarked upon a journey of self discovery and improvement and to have our chosen mode of travel described as a sin is both insulting and reeks of taking way rather than giving.

Snarky one liners such as this contribute nothing to the collective wealth of knowledge on TAY have no place here and your negativism and sarcasm is not appreciated. I'm sure RonJ will agree with me.

I've been snowboarding more then 20 years and BC snowboarding since 1993 and using snowshoes and do just fine. I used old-school clickers and have MSR snow shoes that also have clicker so I can just click into the shoes and click into the board and it works well for me. I used to ride more with skiers but now pretty much just other snowboarders only because the skiers we used to ride with pretty much gave up over the years.

Hyak is a great place to test out your endurance and no avy danger to speak of. Hike up the face, ride down the backside, hike backup and ride down the front side. If you get adventurous you can do Mt Catherine behind Hyak and as your endurance and experience grow you can venture to other areas.

FWIW....

Scotty, This should be your signature for all posts! :)

MW8888 and hyak.net thanks for weighing in pro-SS. I was beginning to think the world had gone split crazy. Does everyone really have the $ to drop on a split when they've never even tried the sport before?

I guess i'm running in the wrong circles...

Been snowboarding since 1985.  Snowshoe'd since then.

For those that call them "slowshoes" - It's not the canoe, it's the indian.

Snowshoes rock.  Can get them on and off in -30 degree/ wind blowing at 100mph.  Can use mountaineering boots (so you can keep your crampons in the pack).  Does not cost $1,000. Can let your non-skiing fiends use them when they are not on your pack.

Splitboards are good tools in the right conditions, but why not just ski then??

Have fun, no matter what you use.

Adjusted for inflation MW88888 has been saying the same thing on this board since his first post back in 2003.  FWIW.
