Looking for somebody to share some beta with me. I find TR's for the slot and several tatoosh trips easily- but have questions about the approach and want to hear some general suggestions.

background: trying to ease my girlfriend and her brother into some day trip tours after several splitboard trips up around rainier. obviously, the impression the paradise area gives them is not that of climbing and route finding. It took me a long time to convince and build my ski partners splitboards (artic cat fans are hard to convince NOT to go sledding) and they're finally feeling ready for a real and much more remote tour (again, than paradise area).

I don't want to screw this up and leave them not stoked based on logistical errors like where to go and what difficulty it might be for them.

would the tatoosh be better than the slot... information like that?

(they're knowledgeable in avy scenarios and super competent riders- more or less i just want to put TAY to work for peace of mind in trip selection)

thanks

I'd recommend Tatoosh over the Slot.  Here's why:

Unless the conditions are very good, the climb from Alpental to the top of the Slot is the most difficult popular skin track I can think of.  It is steep, winding it's way through and around a couple cliff bands and the snow conditions are often hard and crusty.  Many people boot at least one section.  If they have good skinning technique and are comfortable on steep icy tracks or someone has set an excellent track in soft snow it is fine, otherwise it could lead to some frustration.

Another suggestion is the Bullion Basin area at Crystal.  A low key approach up old roads and plenty of options once you are there.

I think Matt is on the right track with his advice. Burgdorfer's guide should give some good notions of addition tours. Volken's Snoqualmie area guide (which includes the Slot, though I greatly preferred MtnPhil's moniker of "Enigma Gully") is more slanted toward tours that involve challenges that might deter new tourers (though it does include some easier tours like Catherine and Kendall Trees). You can always ratchet it up as you see how they respond.

My 2 cents is that the Slot tour is contradictory with your aims as stated above.

This is precisely the beta I was seeking. Thanks. Her brother specifically mentioned the tatoosh and the slot- that's why I asked.

your PM's gave me a few great idea's outside of the catherine and snoqualmie area experience I started with two years ago.

thanks for letting me put TAY to work.

Given it's location proximal to ski areas and just a quick 1hr from Seattle, most tours in and around Snoq pass do not offer much in the way of solitude or remoteness.  The climb up Mt Snoq is fairly physically demanding, gaining 3000ft in around 2 miles to the mouth of the Slot with several sections that require good negotiation depending on snow conditions.  Fun- yes, popular now- overly so. A gentle introduction to hiking for turns- not.
