Coming home tonight it was the same story...total white knucklers creppy crawling along. What blows me away is the number of these people in big 4X4 SUV`s and they were running with chains on and still driving like they were terrified.

Not to mention Deer and Elk. Recently my Ford explorer was attacked by a deer to the tune of $2500. No injuries but scary just the same. I always thought it would never happen to me because I was so wary.
Knock-on-wood: I was coming down from Longmire the other day on solid ice when a deer jumped out in front of me; I thought "O sh*t, here goes my new Subaru!" I pressed on the brakes firmly and the ABS kicked in and the walnut shells in my Toyo Observes could be heard grinding into the ice each time the ABS put the pressure on (maybe 5-7 grinds); the car slowed down greatly and straightly and the noise caused the yearling deer to turn around and jump back at the last second; if I had hit the deer the damage would have been relatively minor as I would have been going 1 mph or so. I was pleased with both the ABS and tires, I didn't think I had enough distance to slow down that much. I'm glad no one was close behind me!

I had to work at Meadows and I got to Brightwood at 11:30 Am and it was a complete dead stop. The backup was from Government camp to the truck scales in Brightwood. No wrecks, just people doing 10 MPH and straddling the lane (it is actually 2 lanes uphill) so no one could pass. I actually turned around and drove all the way back to Troutdale and got on I-84 and drove to Hood River to run up Hwy 35. It was a fine drive that way and I followed some guy in a Suburban all the way to meadows. We were able to run 55-60 all the way up on compact with good gravel. When he turned off at HRM, I noticed he had Arizona plates (I am from Arizona too)....so, how is it that two guys from Arizona can manage to cruise without a problem on snow at the speed limit (even a skosh above) with no trouble and these locals can`t manage to get it up past 15 MPH?
The whole time today I was thinking to myself, "why am I doing this to myself to teach a bunch of people who really don`t care about learning to snowboard and who will never come back, when I could be headed to some place like White Pass to splitboard the back country?"
Seriously, I really think if a person is that terrified to drive in snow and ice, they need to stay home!!!!

Yesterday there was an accident about 3 miles outside the park gate heading westbound, ~6pm. The front end was messed up bad, no clue how it happened.

On Thursday the 30th as I left Crystal around 4 on highway 410 there was an elk in the road, down but still alive, and two cars stopped in the road. Wonder what the outcome was. was the animal dispatched? Did it get up and leave? Anybody know?
