To get back to something the OP brings up, I've never liked how it seems like some people who drive in the mountains a lot hog the middle when they are on the outside of a turn. If everyone could be counted on to understand this system it would be great -- from both directions drivers slide to the inside on turns and so reduce the risk of the outside driver sliding off the exposed side. But counting on everyone driving in the mountains to understand and abide by this unwritten "local" norm is a sign you are not thinking things through.
If someone hogs the middle on a turn when passing me I'm always well out of the way, but good luck with the next 100 cars -- just takes one ...
