A guy cited for parking without a FS permit, gets the charge dismissed without hiring a lawyer!

"Congress responded to widespread opposition to the new recreation fees by repealing Fee Demo in 2004, and in its place enacted the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA). The new law allows the Forest Service to charge an amenity fee for an area that contains all of the following amenities: designated developed parking, a permanent toilet facility, a permanent trash receptacle, an interpretive sign, picnic tables, and security services. Congress prohibited the Forest Service from charging a fee solely for parking, for walking through the forest without using facilities or services, for camping at undeveloped sites, or for general access."

Maybe the under 62yo TAY crowd is interested. The rest of us can pay $10 for the lifetime senior pass, wahoo!

Very interesting info.  I was asking down at MARS recently if I needed a 'forest pass' for a recon mission i was doing.  They said only if you're in such and such area.  I'm generally a supporter of user fees, but I hate the NF 'Forest Pass' as a concept.  Glad to hear that you don't have to go to jail for parking in the woods!

And, two years till $10 says it don't matter no more...   :)

Yeah, but for most of us seniors the cost is $10 per year -- unless you happen to remember where you put the pass last year!

Aww--just get two passes, like me--disabled pass (free), senior pass ($10/life)--and keep one in the car and one in the wallet; and if your wife is a more-or-less constant companion in outdoor activities, she can keep a senior pass on the bike (like mine does); :-)

I get a sno-park permit with sled registration valid nov.-may., which pays for grooming, road repair, and road clearing. Then, I take a gamble by not buying a pass for the other 5 months. It has worked in my favor so far! I am not about to pay wages for employees to enforce parking passes by buying a parking pass.
