Hey, Toby, yeah, your 'gamble' is the greater part of my point (and not speakin for him, but maybe Silas'), as to why I don't like the Forest Pass.  The Snow Park permit is something you pay to Washington State Parks, where they perform a service in exchange for your fee, and as we know, the Wa. permit is good in Oregon and Idaho as well (revenue sharing agreement).  The FS Forest Pass is payable to the feds, and is only required for certain destinations within the NF system, but the appearance of the need for a permit is such that even folks who don't need it are inclined to get it - just to be safe...  That's what makes it a crappy system, IMO.

I think the $30 annual forest pass is an incredible bargain and I'm glad to pay it. If my $ helped remove exactly one fallen tree a few miles short of the trailhead on the FS road I am driving, it has paid for itself several times over.

Maybe I have a different perspective coming from out east (KY/TN), but when I moved out here and saw all the places I could go for only $30 a year, I was amazed.

I appreciate the sense of value too, Travertine. Just remember.., you already own that forest. I'm simply not inclined to pay for the clearly increased staffing in the district offices, where they now have all those knickknacks for sale, just to have them tell me that I don't need a Pass.. dg
