A 1 1/2 to 2 inch diameter, 7-8 foot long bamboo pole seems like better choice for trying this out than a $125 piece of fiberglass.
Impossible to ship -- but in most places I'll bet you could find one locally for under $10.

I have extendable poles. Sometimes, I make them really long and then hold them so that my left hand is holding the left grip and part of the right pole extending past, and the right hand holding right grip and left pole extending past. Same effect for the most part. Costs me nothing and a good bit of entertainment while the kids are working out their turns.

I AGREE!
I arrived at Paradise without poles one day and had the great pleasure of skiing with a single borrowed pole that had lost it's mate and had no basket. So I mostly used it as a flat rod. On the downhill trip, it is a blast to ski downhill with out poles - but it was a real drag to skin uphill without them.

What I wasn't expecting was how surfy and cool it felt to ski in deep snow without the poles. I don't really know how to describe it other then to say that by having my hands free things just seemed to feel like they flowed more? I have since thought that a lurk might feel similar.

If you want the lurk/telestick eperience and have probe poles, screw them together in probe mode. It's fun and good training for not relying overly on separate poles-no leaning on a "crutch", no dropping of the non-planting hand-but only functional on groomers and open slopes, duh.
Grabbing the 2 poles together like Holly described is a basic exercise for balance and timing, but the longer total length allows the tap of the pole tip on the snow surface.
It's like a teleboard: if it was really effective more folks would use them already!
