Thank you everyone for the replies and answers to my NEWBIE question! LOL! I have been thinking about splitboarding as I am a snowboarder but short ski's with skins wouldn't be out of the question for me as well. What would have better control and efficiency for hiking up slopes for a snowboarder = splitboard or short skis? Do I need skins if I use a splitboard for hiking?
Using a splitboard is less annoying - you only have to stow your skins (and poles, if you don't carry them in your hand) for the descent. Skins don't weigh very much, and aren't too bulky. Also, splitboards in ski mode are generally larger and have better float in soft snow conditions than approach skis. You can also use a splitboard as a regular snowboard for hiking or in-resort use.
