Velillen,

Thanks for that edu-mi-cation. I've definitely heard Bremerton schools are not as good. I think Gig schools sound spot on, really.

Thanks everyone else who's added. Feel free to keep the thoughts flowin'.

One thing to consider is Gig harbor is a bit more "ritzy" and expensive real estate wise (last time i checked at least) One option is to move more towards Port Orchard which is maybe 15 minutes towards Bremerton. You can find a lot of land in that area and its generally a lot cheaper than being more towards Gig Harbor.

I couldn't help giggling a bit because my buddy in Poulsbo always refers to Port Orchard in the same way residents of greater Vancouver, B.C.joke about Surrey, B.C. uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Surrey,_British_Columbia
I will also toss in that his wife taught at a Montessori school on Bainbridge Island for many years and they were not particularly happy with the schools of Central Kipsap.

How's the skiing at Alpental?

Alpy ranges from sublime to "character building" depending on the freezing level and year. This year it leans toward the latter. It certainly has the terrain if you like steep stuff with rocks and trees. Don't expect Colorado-style amenities, though.

GH, as others have noted, is one of the nicer places in the SeaTac area as long as you're not trying to enter or leave when all the other people are. That applies to a lot of waterfront towns in Western Washington. The kids of friends who've gone through the Gig Harbor school system (now grown) seem to have acquired a reasonable set of job skills and level of literacy as well. You could do a lot worse.

Don't have much info about Gig Harbor or that area, but as a native Coloradan and former ski industry employee living in Port Angeles for the past 8 years, I love the skiing out here. The big secret that the tourist bureau doesn't tell you in Colorado is that the snow there is too light and too little. Here in the "Northwet" that wonderful wet snow falls feet worth at a time and sticks to every godforsaken rock, chute, and cliff face. In CO, what does fall rots out under your feet during long cold dry spells, or slides to the bottom of the chute. Some years, like this one, see warm spells and droughts in the northwest, but normally the snow is measured in yards, not inches. Also, the high falutin and ritzy ski resort scene is mostly nonexistent. I spent time in Summit County, Vail, Telluride, Steamboat, Winter Park, and others and would rather hang out at Hurricane Ridge with my kids ripping turns on the rope tow while I catch a few turns myself.

Yeah, I've been amazed my whole life that CO is the ski-tropolis that it is. I think if it weren't for the religious convictions of the majority in UT that it would have been what CO is. It is changing, though, but slowly. CO will always be a destination.

And, to be honest, it can have some pretty good skiing. Hardest part is the ski season is so short! The corn show in spring and summer is ok, but the lines are short, too.

I've had the chance to live and ski many places, and know well what we have here isn't the best skiing. We do have elevation, and lots of it, and tons of sunshine, though.
