I myself have never been guilty of a" yuppie 911" but I have had a few "white trash 411's" if you ;) know what I mean, nudge , nudge.

Thinking of buying a Spot Messenger for peace of mind during more remote sled accessed trips this winter. I'll be sure to hit "911" when I can't find a good hoppy India Pale Ale. Instead of saying "our water tasted salty" my message will say "this beer tastes Canadian, it's watery".

Valid comments, all.. You'll get no argument from me and it is at least a little offensive to note the growing disconnect between personal responsibility and 'getting out there', or any other life issue, for that matter. I'm not sharp enough to truly know what has driven this condition, but it is clear that we have built a society of services that can save your butt under a large number of circumstances. I might do my best to be prepared (and I don't mean Spot, EPIRB, GPS, cell, etc), and I might overreach on an outing of some sort, perhaps in part because I know there is a safety net out there, so perhaps I'm part of the problem. I was glad to read, though, that after the third call the rescuers yanked those yuppies out of there - hopefully at a cost.

I would make the call, though. No doubt about it. I've helped build that net with every local levy I've supported (and the ones I didn't). I just hope they never have to choose whether or not to respond. And if I was stupid, then make me pay.
