What to do with old ropes? was created by maryg
Have several climbing ropes- old but some are practically NEW condition - hate to junk them but must clean out the garage. Suppose I could make dog chew toys if nothing else. Any place that will take them?

They make pretty good mooring lines -- you might see if anyone down at the various marinas would take them.

Someone on cascadeclimbers was looking for old ropes recently. I just tried some searches and it isn't coming up, but you could always post under the yardsale.

Looks like you can recycle them:

I wonder if REI or some other local mountain sport retailer participates in this program. It seems a bit expensive to ship your ropes back to Maine.

Still, it seems like a better option than trying to make dog leashes, or extremely high-test hammocks out of your old ropes. The old fibers can find a second life and stay out of the landfill this way.

i know i'd be interested in some.  I always find good uses for them. Dog chew toys for my gf's dog. I mean this dog i bought one of those huge rope toys for like $30 and i think it lasted all of a month before it was pretty trashed. And i have used older ropes for tieing up boats and other things.

Recycling seems like a decent option if a last resort but i am sure there are plenty of people who can use them.
