Tele/AT skis with nowax bases? was created by haydenslides
I'm trying to compile a list of skis that have nowax bases so that i can search for specific models on ebay, craigslist, etc. Scallops, fishscales, whatever you call them! i'm trying to piece together some touring equipment for next winter, and i'm looking for some skis now. I'm new to this whole ski thing... up until now i've snoboarded/splitboarded.
I'm excited about getting out into the backcountry in the winter to do some overnighters.
anyone care to contribute any makes/models for my quest? thx!

The Karhu XCD Guide and 10th Mt. are awesome skis! there's also the X Terrain and Lite Terrain from Alpina. If your looking for a ski with some modern shape that's about all there is on the market these days. Fischer, Atomic and Rossi all make a few models of no wax metal edge skis but nothing with the shape of the Karhu Guide. I would look for something with a full metal edge and a positive pattern for PNW use. If you want to crank turns look for something with as much width and sidecut as you can find. If you just want to tour there should be plenty of older longer skinnier skis on the market.

Trak Ranger 1977 had full metal edge , positive fish scale pattern , 65mm+ waist and dim. similar to Miller softs .Big spoon tip and slow, but good compromise for the day. I believe 190 was the only size. Another ski is the 1978 Duret Everest ,negative pattern, wide, honeycomb core, full metal edge ,climbed poor with out skins but could turn postholes into champagne. Light A.T. setup. Designed to circumnavigate Everest. I loved these skis. Good luck!

I ski a pair of Karhu Guides -- I like them quite a bit. They are very light for the amount of floation. They ski very well in soft snow. On hard snow and/or high speeds their light construction shows it's limitations. In powder conditions the waxless base allows climbing modest inclines -- e.g. typical logging roads. In spring corn the pattern grips on steeper slopes. One place where the pattern is great is tree skiing -- the pattern makes it easy to adjust your line w/o losing any turns. The Guide is almost the perfect ski for "Turn Farming" -- e.g. picking a slope with some nice snow and setting a gentle ascent track and setting down rows of parallel tracks.

I basically agree. I ski both the Karhu Guide and Alpina Cross Terrain. The Guide is fine in soft snow but readily washes out on firm conditions. The Cross terrain is one hell of a carver on packed/firm and is still ok on powder, especially if skiied long. I tele, and ski each with nothing more than a 3 pin toe. I would call the Karhu a powder ski and the Alpina a 'quiver of one'.
