I basically agree. I ski both the Karhu Guide and Alpina Cross Terrain. The Guide is fine in soft snow but readily washes out on firm conditions. The Cross terrain is one hell of a carver on packed/firm and is still ok on powder, especially if skiied long. I tele, and ski each with nothing more than a 3 pin toe. I would call the Karhu a powder ski and the Alpina a 'quiver of one'.I ski a pair of Karhu Guides -- I like them quite a bit. They are very light for the amount of floation. They ski very well in soft snow. On hard snow and/or high speeds their light construction shows it's limitations. In powder conditions the waxless base allows climbing modest inclines -- e.g. typical logging roads. In spring corn the pattern grips on steeper slopes. One place where the pattern is great is tree skiing -- the pattern makes it easy to adjust your line w/o losing any turns. The Guide is almost the perfect ski for "Turn Farming" -- e.g. picking a slope with some nice snow and setting a gentle ascent track and setting down rows of parallel tracks.
