While we're at it - anyone been to LaGrave? Got suggestions for favorite routes there? How about storm day options at Deux Alpes or Huez?

There are always a few folks in LaGrave from the NW - send me a e-mail and I can give you a couple names to meet up with if they are there.

Classics are all listed in pretty good detail at www.skierslodge.com/legend/ - The big main runs are rather obvious but the more interesting will require going with someone that knows.

With regards to storm days: Deux Alpes - some decent skiing up high but if it is bad weather can be no good - but if it is just that La Grave is closed for whatever reason - you can get some fresh (maybe only tracks down La Grave) if you go up Deux Alpes and then skin over to top of the Girose glacier.

I have had great skiing further east on storm days - Serre Chevalier or Montgenevre - had a lot of good pitches and trees - but keep an eye on the pass - it closes frequently.

You can always skin to P2 at La Grave on storm days and ski the trees all day BTW.

Hey I am about to set off for 7 weeks of backcountry skiing in europe and I want to ski the dolomite alps. Also any literature suggestions on the haute route and dolomites.

Lemme know.

I have found Dr google to be the best source of info and suggestions.  Using the search function in this website (TAY) will also give you Haute Route  and Dolomites trip reports.  For example: backcountry dolomites tour www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboardi...dex.php?topic=9556.0 and
Haute Route area www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboardi...dex.php?topic=9697.0
Let us know your specific questions searching does not answer.

What is your planned itinerary by the way?  Please post timely trip reports as you are able. Thanks.

If you are in the Dolomites I recommend checking out Lagozzoi.

Nice I will be sure to check those out. On another note, and maybe this belongs in another thread but does anyone know of any cheap housing in chamonix, cervinia, zermatt or even europe in general. Sofas, floors, and chairs are also much appreciated, we can cook and clean dishes like pros.

Regarding hut fees and rescue insurance I've found that the AAC(UK) (Austrian Alpine Club, UK) is the best deal, way better than US AAC. Hut discount and worldwide rescue (including helicopter) for 38 GBP (less if you are 60 or older) (about $62) per year. The US AAC "rescue insurance" seems to be evacuation from a trailhead to a hospital or home country, not heli evacuation from a high mountain setting. check out www.aacuk.org.uk/
