I've never used the lx3, but from my understand it's a pretty good camera for landscape shots. It's got a very wide lens, and like the G9/G10, you can attach filters on it. I don't think you could really go wrong with it, but like I said, I've never used one (or seen one outside of a store).

I just got an LX3, after doing lots of research and comparing to the G9 and G10. I wanted the LX3 for its wide-angle, 24mm equivalent. It is amazing to see what fits into the LX3's view, though I haven't taken many shots with it yet. The LX3 has a very fast (f2.0) Leica lens, but if you are looking for a single point-and-shoot then the LX3 may not be the best choice as on the tele end it only goes to 60mm equivalent. I already have a Canon A620. My only reget so far with the LX3 is that it is not a Canon and therefore cannot run the CHDK software to gain all of the extra capabilities (though it does have more standard capabilities than my Canon, eg. various bracketings, RAW).
It seemed to be hard to find a real deal on the LX3, probably because it is a niche camera. Also, be very careful - no matter which camera you choose - about buying from some of the cut-rate east coast photo shops. Sorry but I can't find the link now, but there are hundreds of horror stories of all kinds of bait and switch tactics (for example, invariably one will receive a phone call, after placing online order, to "verify", and that's when one discovers that the online price was for non-USA warranty model, or camera without battery/junk battery, or even a camera without LCD screen).

Thanks for the warning. good advice. I don't generally use a large zoom range as my go-to lens is a 50mm on my slr, and was considering a 24mm for landscapes and portraits. I haven't so much gotten into wildlife photography, unless you mean my friends. I'd be curious to see some of the pictures you've taken with your lx3 if you have them posted somewhere. Thanks.

I have mostly just played around with the LX3 at home, trying to learn all of the controls. There is one photo from the LX3 in the gallery I just put up, but it's not really a very informative sample (though the igloo was seven feet tall and I was close to it when taking that photo):

You can find info on the LX3 on camera review sites, and other sites display lots of sample photos:
dpreview.com
luminous-landscape.com
lawrenceripsher.com
digitalcamerareview.com
Regarding the bait and switch tactics, here are a couple of links:

Many of these camera stores seem to have multiple web sites, and also seem to create and abandon sites often. Watch out for the ShopCartUSA web site. You will see some amazing prices AND amazing reviews, but my conclusion is that the reviews are mostly bogus.
One thing about the LX3 that I forgot to mention, and which may be a limitation for snow photography, is that there is no optical viewfinder. There is just an LCD screen for composing, although it is very large and displays a gorgeous image. I know I am going to miss the pivoting LCD screen that is on my A620 - I find that to be an incredibly useful feature.

I have a G9 and agree with LH about it's quality - great little camera. I've always liked a wide angle on my SLR, so was worried I wouldn't like the 35mm (equivalent) of the G9 but I quickly got used to it (I just shoot panoramas when I want a wide view) and I love the reach of the tele.
Prices are so close right now I'd go with the G10 myself - it has gotten quite good reviews, but the G9 is a great little camera.
Buy lots of memory cards for either one!

Just a quick response to Charles -- neither the G9 or G10 are currently compatible with CHDK, but the vast majority of CHDK functions are available in both, including RAW, exposure bracketing, focus bracketing, live histrograms, etc. I do miss zebra striping, but that's about it.
