I've had a few compact Panasonics, and they are great in good light. At higher ISO (like 400, and even 200 if it isn't really bright out) they are very grainy. But in good light you get images that have the contrast levels and sharpness that only a good lens can give.
24mm is great, but 60mm is really too short for the long end of a walk around zoom, niche camera or not. Where is the quality compact camera with a 24-105mm f/2.8 zoom? That would be a "quiver killer."

For a small camera I love my Lumix DMC-TZ5. I'm by no means a camera expert and don't know if it's really what you're looking for, but it takes great shots and has a 10x optical zoom which I thought was pretty good for a pocketable camera.

The DMC-TZ5 is a good camera for ski photography. It's got a smaller sensor than the G9/G10, but at half the cost, you get what you pay for, right? Given the smaller sensor, it tends to be noisier in low light, but should do well for bright outdoor shots. It's also got the same highlight clipping issues you see in a lot of smaller cameras, but that's easy to fix -- underexpose by 1/3 to 2/3 stops when shooting on snow, and you should be alright.
