a question for splitboarders was created by coyote
i'm wondering what is the best boot to use with the voile mountain plates. it seems that a really soft AT boot would be best- as far as AT boots are concerned, but i'm wondering how a plastic shelled mountaineering boot would work?
what is the best boot?

Best is subjective with boots for sure but I personally found PMB's (even modified) were not very supportive on the ride down.

In my opinion the Scarpa Avante is a great boot for splitting. If you can find them. I hear they were very unpopular with skiers becasue they were too soft.

Another way to soften the an AT boot up for board turns is to cut the tongues out and replace them with a rubber gasket.

I've tried several boot options on the splitty, including plastic mountaineering boots, and believe a three buckle or less lightweight AT boot is the way to go until someone builds a specific boot for the job, which will probably never happen because the market is sooooooooooooooo tiny.

I have been very happy with a pair of Scarpa Matrix which is a 3 buckle boot. As mentioned above, boots are very personal - suggest trying on several models in the 3 buckle configuration and get what fits you the best.

i used a scarpa denali AT boot for about 5-6 years. any similar boot would work.. better edge control, ease of crampon use and kicking steps.

Thanks for that link been curious about that question myself. Also turned me on to something cool I had never heard of: people putting Dynafit toepieces on plates on their splits, so they could use Dyna-compat boots for ascending! Have any of the TAY splitters given that a try?
