so, i guess the next question is how do they compare in relation to a regular boarding setup? not meaning "i like them better or worse", but how is the style of riding changed? and do they help or hinder performance- if so, how?

Check...

www.sparkrandd.com/

best option out there for soft boot set up....

I assume.
I've not had the privilege to ride a set yet...

lower and lighter, yes. but you're still in a soft boot which is less than ideal for kicking steps and climbing or rapelling in crampons.

Pair the Spark R&D with the Burton Driver X's and strap on crampons and your be fine....

mostly boils down to if you plan to do more climbing than riding I suppose.

Best of luck

I rode this exact setup for most of last year. Works excellent in most all conditions. Can't beat it in the winter, and even in icy spring routes the Driver X's excel. I was so stoked on the boots that I found another pair on the internet cheap and purchased them. Grivel crampons work well with this boot. The bindings rock and make skinning easier, plus the overall weight of the board is reduced. Kick turns are easier too :)
