Just remember to swap back to your summer tires once the weather warms up -- the softer rubber compound used for winter tires wears out much more quickly on warm dry pavement.

... Nokians will perform best and longest.  The only drawback seems to be the price, about $105 each!...

::) ::) ::) The 4 10-ply 20" M&S tires on my PU cost $1,500 installed ;D :-[ :'( >:(

Before moving to the northwest I was a long-time Minnesota resident. Minnesotans know snow tires (gotta use them eight months out of the year up there). Anyway, the advice on the Hakkapeliitta Nokian tires is spot on. They are expensive but without peer when it comes to snowy driving. This site has some pretty good info.

Another vote for Hakkas. Last February, I competed in the Alcan 5000, a "touring rally" with "time-speed-distance" sections that went from Seattle up through CA to the Beaufort Sea (we drove on it, the same ice roads "as seen on TV"), then to Jasper, then home to Seattle, in 11 days; the distance was equivalent to driving from Seattle to Miami, then to Denver; much of it was on snow and ice, and we weren't exactly taking our time. A majority of the cars ran on studded Hakkas (we had Hakka 2s).

On the ice road to Tuktoyaktuk:

0.02 on studless -- they're pretty darn good, but annual Swedish tire test data published in one of their major newspapers continues to reflect superior performance of studded tires in icy conditions (braking, acceleration, turning, etc). I just got the 08'/'09 article: the Hakka 5 scored highest for studded tires. The best-performing studless was the Blizzak Nordic WN-01, but I don't know if it's the same tire we get in the States.
