, on hard ice; couldn't get wheelspin on dry pavement with any tires ...Last year I got some Hankook Zovac HPs for my old Subaru wagon (13"), $82/ea installed with tax at Discount Tire. I love 'em. I pretty much have to floor it in 1st gear to get any wheelspin, in 4wd.

It appears as though the inexpensive studless tires don't come in sizes small enough to fit my little Escort (175/65R14) , hence the question.

Thanks! I was able to score a set of fairly studded tires on wheels that're in good shape and fit for $100 off craigslist. Once they wear out, studless is more than likely the way to I'll go. (And, if they turn out to be sub-par, I'll certainly make use of your link!)

I'll be curious to hear your review of the Conti TS810's. If I had AWD I would have chosen them too.
My General Tire Arctic Altimax's are in the basement waiting for me to find the time to get them on the Accord. Could have used them this morning given conditions on I5. It was a smash-up-derby deluxe commute.
Let's have a safe winter driving season everyone!
