Looking for some knowledge was created by PetefromBoston
Hey TAYers,
I've been trying to (safely) get into BC stuff since last spring. Due to a 4mo detour to the SW Asia, I basically missed out on this winter (got some Oct Paradise turns in) - so far. The main thing I missed out on was any avy classes that I saw offered. You can only learn so much about backcountry travel from books and trip reports, so I was wondering if anyone would be willing to show myself and a friend the ropes. I'm a solid skier and in good shape but obviously lacking in the experience area.
Anyway, should be at Baker lift accessed tomorrow. I'll be the one trying to make up for a season of skiing in one day.
Pete

Good start!
While you are waiting for your (3 meter) probes to arrive, you can practice with your transceivers. You can do this off snow, anywhere, anytime.
Check back in when your probes arrive and you have replaced your plastic shovels with ones made of metal.

so the plastic shovels we build snowmen with are no good?? Just kidding. Yup we've got metal shovels and are spending today practicing burying our transceivers. I'll put probes on the shopping list

Try putting the beacon in a pack and take turns burying it over 3 feet deep. You will likely quickly see why Tim is harping on the probe (though in this still artificial scenario, probe poles might get you buy).
Welcome to the area. Happy to hook up for touring at some point (hey, I'm from Boston too, and needed someone to take pity on me when I moved here...).
