Maybe the ranger that you spoke with on the trail was not trained in writing tickets and told his superior back at the office, who then decided to ding you for it. I got a ticket once on Shuksan, for camping in a national park without a permit. The trailhead for the sulphide is outside the park and there is no sign at the trailhead that you're going to enter a national park when you get to the summit. the national park boundary sign was buried by five feet of snow, so... I was able to talk my ticket down from 75 to 15. When I went to court the prosecutor had no idea what I was talking about and had much bigger fish to fry.

As tax cuts or hikes and economic stimulus checks go, I think I might use mine in Canada for an avy class? ;)

In light of the topic of Registration & Fines: Through the grapevine I heard that the snowmachinist that fell into the crater on St. Helens recently was not registered AND that he did not have to pay for the rescue.  Does anyone know if this is true?

As for the fine for the circumfrence tour the reason that Garth was fined was because he didn't have the kindest attitude towards the ranger .

What is the fine for being "not nice" to a ranger?

"Failure to register for glacier travel" ($275) and "Failure to pay required fees - climbing pass" ($75).

More of a what will the ranger let you get away with if you are nice  ;)

I just wanted to comment regarding a couple of the latest posts.

I guess it is plausible that the ranger wasn't experienced in writing tickets and that a superior decided to ding me. But 6 months later?

We were very courteous to the ranger and thanked him when we thought he was letting us go with a verbal warning. :)
