BC Huts was created by jasonsalvo
Seeing as it's the middle of August, it seems like a good time to start making plans for the pipe dream vacation I probably can't afford next winter. So here's the question, which BC hut is the best/best deal? Is it Valhalla? Or are there too many Wagnerian women singing there? Is it Sorcer Lodge? Or are there too many wizards and too few muggles there? <snort, Harry Potter joke> Or is it some really cool hut I've never even heard of? ? ?

We don't know what huts you have heard of, what kind of skiing you prefer, or what kind of trip you want (guided? catered?).

For starters, here are a few ideas:

The most plush lodge is probably Kokanee. Stuffed chairs, hot water shower, internet connectivity.

The best terrain is probably Fairy Meadows. You have to win the lottery to get there, or know someone who did. Literally.

All the good lodges are booked for this year, so you will need to join a party trying to replace dropped members. If you register with the ACC as someone wanting to be an alternate, chances are you will get to go. Otherwise, keep an eye on the ski BBS's for openings.

I recommend that you consider this outfit www.skihike.com/winter/itin_skitraverse.html
They offer several options of cabins and tours. You will not find a better deal for your money. If you are interested ,I can dig up a TR with photos from the week long tour that I did in the Spring of 06 with my son.

Hey, Some friends and I have had great luck with huts. We have a CAC member in the crew and he handles the lodge logistics. As a member you can reserve time and book things up. We spent five nights at the Asulkan hut (Rogers Pass) in 06 and six nights in the Stanley Mitchell (Little Yoho) in 07. Some of the best trip of my life. Good luck.

I wonder if Kokanee is truly the plushest - I heard from a guide that there's a trend toward indoor toilets, hot showers, net connectivity, and other plush details. Sentry seemed pretty darned plush, and it was hard to believe anyone would have them beat but I guess there's a race in this direction.

We did a Fairy Meadow trip with an ACC group - we had to join the ACC for it but it was a decent deal overall and helped us get in relatively late in the year - may be worth checking their trips to see what's still open. Only thing about the terrain there - it is best if you have decent weather, but if you get stormed out the little tree patch below the hut apparently gets rather old. And the week we were there, we had a few nice days of great snow followed by a wind event followed by the rest of the trip focusing more on mountaineering as a goal rather than turns. So great terrain, depending on what you are looking for. The folks running the trip told us that if turns are your objective, try Golden Alpine Holidays (merged this year with Sentry lodge), as their huts are a little lower, thus less prone to wind hammering, and they have mucho treed terrain for storm days. But they don't have glaciers and high craggy peaks - more like smaller glaciated roundy peaks with some semi-craggy ridges. So as Tim notes, "what kind of skiing you prefer" is a key bit that would help folks suggest appropriate huts - otherwise you'll just hear what we each like best (for my part, I loved Fairy Meadow but only went once, and have gone into the Golden Alpine/Sentry area something like 6-7 times now...).
