Meadow ? backside of Hyak? was created by jcarlson
I am wondering if the area over the back of Summit east (aka Hyak) has open enough area for kite skiing? Small trees not too thick ok. Open area with gentle slopes would be ideal.
Any idea how much the east winds that blow through the pass would get into that area?
Thanks,
Jay

What about the long, broad, sloping clearcut between Windy Pass and Silver Peak, that the logging road cuts up through? That might be perfect. Very wide open. Not that I'm a kite skier

I'd tend to agree with Marcus.
While access to Windy Pass is longer (but not particularly difficult, due to the Hyak Nordic trail system), as I recall the area is devoid of the plethora of powerlines that I seem to recall on the backside of Hyak. Also not being a kite skier, I wouldn't know for sure, but, I would imagine the preponderance of powerlines might slightly interfear with kite skiing frivolity.
One might also suspect that Windy Pass got it's name for a reason that could be helpful in such endeavors.

I would not advise kite skiing on the backside of Hyak for the reasons mentioned above, the powerlines that cross the area north/south about 2/3 of the way down.
If you look at this photo taken last March you can get an idea of what the trees look like with normal snowpack and you can see the power lines at the top above the large wooden frame over the dino (suppose to protect from fallen power lines I guess).

Thanks everyone for the info. I got a good sesion in this afternoon at lake keechalus. The snow park had rangers turning people away around 12:30 but I drove up and got one of the few parking spots anyway.
Good snow and sunny weather during the Chrismass holiday really brought out the masses.
Snowkite skiing and boarding is a pretty new game so we are stil trying to discover places to do it.
I don't know when windy pass is windy (could be a summer thermal thing). Or how much trudging in it is. My pack today was full sized (large kite etc.), looked like I was going in for a couple nights!

Windy pass would probably be a great area for kite skiing. Bring a small kite. Strong easterlies blow through there much of the winter. The trees are small enough to be little problem once there's a decent snowpack. (Should be fine now.) The only negative I can think of is that the snow is often crusty and variable, which could make for some great wipeouts.
