Hey Robie, the "geezers" did Mt Catherine on Sunday, had a great time. To the rest of you that have been wondering what some of the Rainier regulars are doing ???, well trying to be more creative and getting to know some of our other areas more intimately. One nice thing to think about come this spring, is all the untracked runs that will be available around Rainier, now that's really trying to turn that bushel of lemons in to some lemonade :

Climbing ranger Mike Gauthier blog is a good source of info. on the state of repairs. For people that want to climb Rainer at this point he is recommending that they approach via Hwy-410 at Crystal Mtn blvd. A bit longer apporoach!

Yes, the best/only real access is via Hwy 410 (at Crystal Mtn.) or at the Carbon River Ent. The Paradise road corridor is currently closed, so don't show up there expecting to walk up. As I understand it, they don't want folks walking the road with the heavy equipment.
I'll put info up on the blog when I get it.
Also, we're setting up some public events to share information about the flood, the long term affect on access and to potentially raise funds for non-profits that work closely w/ park and forest service areas.

Does anyone have current information about when the road to Paradise (might) open.
I don't know about anyone else, but I sure miss skiing the Tatoosh...

The "Nineline" said on Friday that the Park Service was going to allow pedestrian and bicycle traffic to access as far as Longmire over the New Year's weekend (which, I believe, is about to end) between the hours of 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM daily.
The latest estimate that I know of for long term vehicular access above Longmire was the Tribune Article that Gator made reference to in his blog on Dec. 11th, which estimated sometime in March before full access would be restored.
Gator also mentioned various events being scheduled to update the public on the Park's access issues, one of which is to be held at the Tacoma Mountaineers on January 19th. Maybe we'll get a good update then.
