Interesting -- for those of you who lock out the toes while skiing, do you do it all the time, or are you only doing it in situations where you'd never want to lose your skis? I.e., you need the long sharp bits to have a prayer of stopping? Just curious...

That's what I was thinking when I first mounted the comforts. It turns out that this defeats the purpose. I was having WWWAAYYYY more forward releases until I moved the rear piece back to 4 mm, as recommended. According to Lou and Andrew Maclean, the "reverse camber ejection" takes your skis off if you shrink the 4 mm gap, mostly when you are doing something that causes the tips and/or tails to be raised, such suspending yourself by tips and tails, or jamming your tips into a hard pillow or road cut.

... With the Comforts, if you really want the suckers to never let go, another option is to move the rear piece toward the toe piece until it's closer than specs...

I saw the picture, Sky, but as you say, "only a flesh wound" fortunately.
After I started grinding the bump off my TLT's which gives you a couple more mm's of room for the ski to flex, I tried halving the distance between the boot heel and heelpiece to 2mm and I felt they actually released easier. When I thought about it, moving the heelpiece forward actually increases the distance between the pins where they contact the metal heel plate, thus (perhaps) reducing the force required to initiate a release. The extra pin insertion depth would help when the ski counterflexes, though.

Yesterday morning, I rear-released in a high-speed header and connected ski tip to eye socket. I have a pretty shiner going now.

FWIW- I have been told by tech. people that using a brake increases release tension. Instead of your boot just "hanging out" on the pins, your boot sole is also resting on the brake platform. I can see this having more of an effect in lateral release, but it could, maybe, effect upward relaese?? Also, I was told that there are 2 different spring combos that can be used in the bindings. And if the binding is ski brake compatible (comforts), then it comes with the lesser spring due to brake platform/boot sole interface I stated above.
I think that the rear spacing is important and needs re-checking at least a couple times a year.
Marcus, I have only used Dynafits for a year now, but lock them out when I especially don't want them to pre-release.
Also, I ski with them maxed, except for my right lateral release due to an intermedullary tibial rod, and havn't pre-relaesed yet. I weigh 172# (they tell me I am big boned).

Friction from the brake should increase lateral release settings, as does using a shim under the forefoot as I do with my F1 setups. It shouldn't affect forward release other than to slightly pre-load the binding and perhaps lesson the indicated setting.

By "forward release" do you mean vertical release?
And the one mention of "rearward release" is intended to refer to . . . ?
Also, for any kind of prerelease, how can you be certain that the heel unit's release mechanism was actually activated as opposed to either blowing straight forward out of the toe unit pincers or even the "Flex" or "Houdini" effect as described here:
