If you are used to powder skiing in the PNW you will be disapointed with Colorado skiing. Average (and good) bases there are about 1/4 the snow depth totals averaged in the PNW. It just doesn't snow that much. But you won't mind the sun. Trade off?

huh?

My daughter will be living inside Denver city limits, has skied Cascade cement, and more recently Schweitzer smoke, hoping to find similar in Colorado.  Thanks for the humorous comments, and thanks even more to those who have detailed their specific preferences on lift and backcountry locations near Denver.  More specifics are welcome, keep 'em coming please.  Where to find nexpensive lodging near the skiing?

The folks who bought lift tickets I skied with all bought Loveland pass Ski area passes.  They were cheap, and you could avoid E-tunnel traffic.  Also, A-basin is WAY small and on powder days is tracked out before you can say "avalanche control work on the east wall'.

Besides, you could then skip the lifts and ride the traffic all afternoon at the Pass (or you will, Dad, while your daughter lifts it) like all the rest of the locals.

Can someone please define/quantify a "powder day" at A-Basin?

I consider a powder day at Alpental to be 12" of new or more. I don't think A-Basin has had one storm that deposited 12" since 1990. But I could be wrong!
