Sahale Peak This Weekend: To turn or not to turn? was created by scotteryx
Taking some friend sup sahale this weekend and just dont know what to do. Bring the skis or not?
www.mtnphil.com shows there was snow on the arm on the weekend of the 3-4th of this month, but the warming temps might have done a # on it. I am aware we'll be biking in with skis from the Eldo TH, so is the payoff factor there? Any comments is appreciated

Skied from just above Cascade Pass last weekend (6/10-11), and there was still ample snow to ski most of the arm, returning to the road via Cascade Pass. The only potentially bare spot might be on the flatter part of the arm about half way up. There was a short carry over rocks at the bottom of the basin, but nothing unreasonable.

You mean you were able to ski below Cascade Pass towards the trailhead? I assume the direct route was out?

We were able to ski right back to the road (where we left it) at the 2nd switchback below the parking lot, coming directly down the basin from the pass. The carry over the rocks was about 200 feet, and this was about 200 yards up from the switchback in the road. We did not ski anywhere near the summer trail, except at the pass of course. A bit of route finding was required amongst the rocks and scrub lower down, but it was very manageable, and the skiing above was well worth it. If you get an early start and get up high on the arm, I would think it would still be a great run. Hope that answers your question.

Quick update on Cascade Pass conditions:
The road is still gated and will probably stay that way as the road is blocked by a plug of snow about 200 feet from the summer parking lot.
The lower basin above the summer lot is still snow covered, but melting fast. A bit of talus traversing is required to get to the road. The snow fingers connecting the lower basin to the upper slopes are rapidly becoming discontinuous. Might require some rock scrambling or the like. Coverage at the Pass is good, the trail is beginning to melt out. Lots of snow in Pelton Creek Basin. Steep couloirs are generally out due to 'schrunds, cracks, runnels, and rocks. Moderate slopes are wonderfully buttery corn.
Conclusion: CP will be quite nice for another week, maybe more. After that I'd guess that the summer trail will be a more efficient way to get to the pass.
