Sorry if I was not clear. It is my impression that the classics havr shorter pins and no adjustability. That should make it harder to fix the pre-release problem.

Even with the classics, with their longer pins, heel piece adjusted all the way forward and the DIN cranked to the end of the scale, I still have had one pre-release. I was entering a thick patch of cement at speed. I was thrown a bit forward, but not beyond what I could have dealt with, had not the pre-release happened. This was in benign territory, but I would hate to have that happen in one of the hairball situations I occasionally get myself into.

I dunno -- maybe I have exhausted springs or defective boot plates. Something is not right and it has me worried for my future!

So let me summarize my understanding:

- You are pre-releasing from the back
- The Classics have short pins and you think they pre-release more often because of that
- The Comforts (same heel piece as the infamous Tri-Step) have longer pins, and after pushing the heel piece forward as much as you could, you only had pre-release.

Could the Classics you had had been mounted a couple mm too far apart (toe and heel)?

YA

IMO, there is a learning curve associated with Dynafit use (either Classic or Comfort) when coming from an alpine binding or a heavy AT binding like a Fritschi . . . neither binding gives you the DIN or the elasticity you have been used to, but the slightly longer pins in the Comfort have an advantage in hold-down power. As mentioned above, a stiffer ski should also serve to reduce pre-release.

At 165 lbs., and with careful monitoring of the 4mm gap between boot heel and heelpiece with the regular TLT (now Classic) I've reduced the incidence of pre-release to what I consider an acceptable level. The TLT/Classic does move in a fore/aft plane, enough to adjust the gap but not enough to accomodate several boot sizes - it's the TLT Race and Titanium versions that don't move at all.

People like Lou Dawson have been known to swap out the pins in their TLT's for Comfort pins and setting the gap to 5mm, which I would do if I could find some extra Comfort pins . . .

...
People like Lou Dawson have been known to swap out the pins in their TLT's for Comfort pins and setting the gap to 5mm, ...

Are you implying that INCREASING the gap would help prevent pre-release? Would not increasing the gap lessen the length of pin holding on to the heel?

Stiffer skis would help prevent pre-releases resulting from over-bending the ski, such as you might if you hit a bump hard. I thought that was the problem, but my last pre-release came when I was pitched forward by entering a patch of deep, heavy snow. No ski bending occured here.

Besides, If I have to choose between the ski and the binding, the ski will win. I love my Jak BC's for Baker's heavy cement, and it is their non-torsional softness that gives them their float.
So I just called Life-Link's customer service. The lady told me that if people are using their (Dynafit) boots they would not pre-release. She also said something about the fact that companies like Garmont advertise their boots as being compatible but that "of course" it's without consulting them. Now I know that it actually costs Garmon some money to put the Dynafit bits on their boots, which makes sense as they have to license the technology. So.... When I asked about that she went back to the defensive line of "we recommend using our boots." Yes but that 4-buckle is freaking heavy hence my looking at the Garmont Megarides.

She also said that one cannot get the longer pins :(

Damn... Heavier or more pre-releases? The Comfort is probably the safe choice then, despite the weight?

YA
Are you implying that INCREASING the gap would help prevent pre-release?

The pins are 2mm longer; since inadvertant release can occur from either the boot pulling upward at the heel or from compression (heelpiece coming closer to boot heel and negating the space, causing the heel to rotate outward) he says he splits the difference and goes with 5mm gap. Obviously in your example, Tim (straight forward ejection), leaving the gap at 4mm and having 2mm more "insertion depth" would have been more helpful. I haven't found any Comfort pin donors yet, so I haven't tried it either way. Queries as to Comfort pin prices/availability e-mailed to LifeLink received no answer . . . (they are usually quite prompt in answering my questions/selling me stuff direct).
