I don't think so.

You can probably see Bellingham, though.

You can see quite alot of Rainier from Marine Dr. just outside of Bellingham, near Marietta, on a nice clear day. And just out from Marine drive, on Lummi Island, you can see some East Vancouver skyscrapers. So, It may be possible. I think you could see Grouse/Cypress/Seymore's lights from Rainiers summit, being a bit higher.

It should definitely be possible to see the lights of Grouse, since we could add almost 80 miles for the 4,100' summit of Grouse Mountain. Even using a large correction for refraction on 225 miles, that would give us ~190 miles which should definitely get us there. But that's not Vancouver!

Anyone know how high the tallest building in Vancouver is? Guessing 300m (1000') gives 185 miles if we add it to Rainier. Correcting for refraction makes it dubious. Maybe one could see the top of a skyscraper. Any firsthand observations?

Glad to see there are some Math geeks around. Thats some interesting info. I doubt you would be able to see a skyscraper. It would be too small in size...anyone know? It would be interesting to bivy on the summit on a crystal clear nite in order to spot lights of Grouse Mountain (I would never try that though). If you wanna check out the skyscrapers from the summit you'd better do it soon. More people are migrating to Vancouver every day...the extra traffic is gonna make our smog even worse.

Can you see Seattle from St Helens?

I swear I saw St Helens from I-5 just south of downtown once, on a really clear day.

Here is a rough formula based on the Pythagorean Theorum that given the height of a target in feet, would give the distance in miles that it would take to hide the target below the horizon.

The height of the mountain would be net of the altitude (in feet) of the point of observation.

In this case I used a target of 14,410 feet observing from sea level. All the other numbers in the formula are fixed.

the formula in Excel Spreadsheet: =SQRT((((14410/5280)+7900)^2)-62410000)

In this case the result is 207.67 miles. So at 208 miles, Mt. Rainier would be totally below the horizon. Vancouver, BC is approximately 180 miles from Mt. Rainier. So, theoretically, six inches of Mt. Rainier would be visible from Vancouver, B.C. if nothing were blocking the view. In practicality, Mt. Rainier would be just out of site and if you were on top of a 7,000 foot mountain at Vancouver, B.C. then you could see about 7,000 feet of Mt. Rainier.

Hey! .. that's my best guess...
