Thanks for the messages. The exchange of information on TAY is good for all of us. I hope to get new skis, and also hope that this is a fluke because I have enjoyed skiing the FR 10.

I was recently invited on a 4 day trip into Glacier Peak planned for the end of March and was just thinking how screwed one would be to be in there and have the ski fail....I may need to take the Shuksans for reliability, but would much rather have the uphill and downhill performance of the FR 10s.

Today I received a replacement ski from Life-Link/ Dynafit. Kelly at Pro Ski / North Bend, WA mounted it this afternoon after my sunny Wenatchee Mountains ski tour on my old Shuksans. Tomorrow I plan to track a nice high elev. (for here) powder stash on the FR 10s!

Thank you very much to Tim Kelly at Life Link/ Dynafit for coming up with a replacement. Thank you to Kelly and Martin at Pro Ski for their good service, and to Kelly for representing my situation to Life Link/ Dynafit.

This season I feel that I have the ultimate touring setup in 29 years' touring, the 178 cm FR 10, Dynafit bindings, Dynafit Ski Touring Aero (3-buckle) boot, and Coll Tex 60/40 mohair/nylon skins. I still tour with my 1992 Life Link carbon fiber avalanche probe ski poles- with their original baskets as well. Another significant investment this year was the ABS pack Model 45 (Dynafit), and I am well pleased with it after about 10 days touring with it, but hope to never test it in actual use!

In a discussion with Kelly at Pro Ski, we concluded that I stressed and delaminated the top layer while climbing steeply on the highest setting on the red post, in deep powder. I had skied a narrow ridge from a small summit that had significant avalanche starting zones to either side of the ridge, then literally skinned up my tracks since I was solo with my avy dog. The two screws on the side opposite the offset post pulled first, I skied 400 vf down on the Dynafit toes to a nearly flat 3/4 mile trail out to the snowmobile, and just before getting out to the trailhead in the deep snow the ski broke beneath the screw holes.

I live in a mountain town and climb on foot, bike, or skis 4-5 days per week year around, and I am heavy, so I can transmit considerable force. I release from randonnee bindings easily while climbing with skins unless I concentrate on a flat ski. I have released while ascending not just from Dynafit but also from Fritsches if I do not ascend smoothly and on a flat ski.

My experience will cause me to use care while doing very steep skinning. I would estimate that normal-sized skiers are not as likely at all to do what I did.

Again, thanks to Dynafit/ Life-Link and to Pro Ski in North Bend, WA!
