Well all is well, picked up my BCA Tracker this evening. Look forward to getting some practice and familiarizing my self w/ its operations. Now I just have to split my board and I will be set. Think I have a snow camping trip planed for the 18th and 19th.

Thanks for all the input folks, look forward to meeting some of you this winter.

Tophervw

For those still doing their transceiver shopping, I see that REI has the Mammut / Barryvox on sale Nov 18 - 27th for $239 (Reg $299). An especially good deal for those traveling near Oregon over the holiday.

J.P.

Everyone should be aware of the potential for battery incompatability because battery standards have considerable tolerance. This potentially affects all transceiver brands.

It can affect the transceiver two ways: 1) Transceiver-battery contacts have really two options for dealing with varying battery sizes: they can use a v-shaped flexible contact or they can use a spring. New transceivers have been modified to acknowledge these differences just in the last year or so to maximize contact with varying battery sizes.
2) For batteries that seat in contact with others, laterally (nest), the battery diameters also vary, so the variances can allow shifting of the batteries.

Manufacturers are aware of these problems but because a particular set of batteries can vary widely, they cannot be one hundred percent sure they have solved this problem. They even have trouble replicating the problem in the laboratory. This is true with at least two brands I'm aware of but must be true of the others as well. I have seen about 2% of transceivers - a rough estimate only - in the past two to three years that seem to operate intermitently (can shut off and turn on). Not all of these problems may be related to battery size. But the problem, in my rough estimation, seems across all brands, which makes sense if the batteries vary.

So, what should you do? Consistently check both receive and transmit functions of your transceiver. If it fails to operate, or operates intermittently, and you have properly installed the batteries, the representatives (and technicians) I've talked to would want you to return the unit. The manufacturers have design fixes they think will solve this problem. Personally, for myself and my transceiver stable, I will take an additional step: If I install batteries and find they have a looser than normal fit, I will change the batteries for ones that fit tighter. I offer this as an opinion only and make no guarantees written or verbal.
