The furniture hardware that has a head and two prongs that fold outward after going through the fabric will allow for adjustment.

Do they have extra thread at the store now? I got mine a few years ago and am low on thread. At one point I went to REI in search of a replacement spool, but they had none at the time. (If no, I'll order - thanks for the link JibberD)

thanks!
-sI bought mine and extra thread at REI.
JibberD --

I build my own skins (fell into a great deal on bulk skin fabric a ways back and still havent used it up... 30+ phatty pairs later). Anyway, here's what I do...

Go to the hardware store and get yourself a $7 brass grommet kit. I use the 1/4" or 3/8" ones, I think. The kit comes with a punch that is basically a sharpened tube you hit with a hammer through the skin into a wood block -- dont use a conventional hole punch, they are not strong enough. Get the skin set up as you want it. Punch two holes, then whack two grommets through , and you're done. These hold up great and are much easier to affix than sewing. They look cool, are removable (with some needle-nose work) and offer a convenient tie-in point should you need to rig an alternative system for your skins. I have a buddy in Colorado (mapadu, sometimes posts to tele tips) who has well over 100 days on a set and they are still going strong, as far as I know.

So I'm trying the grommet solution. Here's what it looks like for me:
http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0RADtAsEUR9AIUIcg172aWodCHjbU76n5K6DPE0oVXViG60SNbnhqhY*27VmKrVwLXsOauDRsExkALHfkZ4bb02HXzqeOITEM*a3dL4VBBg4/boots0.jpg?dc=4675544385450527319

Any comments on this technique? Is there a better way? I've used 1/4" grommets. Got the kit for $9.99 at an Ace hardware. It took about 20 minutes to do both skins.

ps THANKS JERM, this looks like a great solution!

Looks like a good one.
Looks like you've got the bail in backwards tho... but on the other hand, I kinda like it that way, I may prefer having the straight bar across the ski tip instead of the curvy cable. It's more like the earlier solid wire bails which I prefer.
Now keep the slidey side down, against the snow (when you find it)
