After after aborting the West Face, Monday I met my father and a coworker of his, Pitr, for a 3 day summit climb up Avalanche Gulch. They'd be on foot, but I'd be bringing my skis. We met at the Fifth Season around 1, and arrived at Bunny Flat later that afternoon. The past week my father had strained his calf, though he thought it'd be alright for this trip. However after putting on his pack and taking just a few steps, he suddenly felt a sharp pop in his calf, limiting him to a limp. Luckily we were just a few steps away from the cars, and my father was in good hands since Pitr is a medical doctor. We discussed our options from this point, eventually settling on camping at McBride Springs that evening, and the next morning Pitr renting randonnée gear, and him and I going on a short tour while my father would wait at Bunny Flat.

We spent the night at the McBride Springs (which had numerous mosquitoes), then the next morning we ate breakfast at The Skillet (nice change of pace from Black Bear) and arrived at 8:45 at the Fifth Season to exchange gear (the 5th season doesn't technically open till 9--but they let us in a bit early). Pitr rented a pair Black Diamond Miras w/ Naxo bindings, Scarpa Tamboo boots and clipfix skins. We rushed up to Bunny Flat and set off around 10:30, a bit late given how warm it was but we did the best we could.

This was Pitr's first randonee tour, though Pitr is a proficient alpine skier and owns a condo across the street from Sugarbowl. Pitr and his 14 year-old son (who was at a Whistler ski camp at the time), have a neat story about spontaneously skiing with Glen Plake earlier in the season at Doner Ski Ranch.

We headed up lower avalanche gulch, with a stop at Horse Camp to get water.

After getting back to the car, Pitr seemed hooked on randonnée skiing and announced he would never posthole down from Helen again. We returned his gear at the 5th, ate dinner at Subway (another nice change of pace from Black Bear) and headed home.

Hope you leg heals soon Dad!
