Hawkins Mountain, May 31

Chris, Mark, Kathleen, Drew, and I headed up the Salmon La Sac road in search of snow.
We aimed for Hawkins, it looked a little thin, so tried for Scatter Peak (Fish Eagle), between Paris and Scatter creek. Promptly got stuck in snowdrift a mile down the road, so dug out, and had a go at Hawkins anyway despite the dryish look of the surroundings.
We made delta-Z fast on the old mine track up Huckleberry (~1500'), leading to open slopes on the west side of Hawkins. Chris Cass "The Snow Nose" Knows, and found a great continuous and open ski line threading the bare spots all the way to the summit. Great views on top of the Tuquala Lake valley, Stuart, and cascade crest, amidst building convective clouds. Snow was a little thin on top, a few rocks to dodge down low, but fun and fast - great corn.
Rain opened up when we got back down, but the convection made for a comfortable cool ascent, and a fabulous sunset while coming back across the pass!

That was some tasty corn!! and not bad managing to break the 50% mark on the joy-o-meter! (vertical feet skied divided by vertical feet hiked/skinned = 2,200 ft / 3,900 ft = 56 %!!!).

Well, I jumped the gun on calling the season over on Hawkins! The photo of the east approach ridge in the other post of the day shows the snow holding in as it always does. Well done, Chris on the sniffing! Hope I didn't steer anyone away, glad you posted this!
