Hi, an odd question about the Cold Springs campground at Mt Adams: I haven't been able to find a map of the campground anywhere on-line at in late May it will still be under heavy snow so it will be difficult to find things. Where about are the pit / compost toilets located? It looks like the road for the campground is about 1,000 feet long after it turns to the right off the road that continues up the mountain, a long way to search for things buried under snow drifts. I suspect there's a good chance no one will have dug out access to the toilets by then so at least if I know about where they're located I can do it with my avy shovel when I'm there and everyone will benefit (and the benefit to me being less weight to haul up and then off the mountain if I can leave a "deposit" there). Thanks.

It's pretty hard to bury those latrines completely (they're 10-12' tall), and they're easy to find. After you enter the parking area while skinning up the road, they may be off to your right just as you leave the road for the forest. In May '08, with ~4-5' of consolidated snowpack, it was easy to kick steps and downclimb to the openable door.

I reread your post - if you're talking about pit toilets uphill from the parking area, I've never seen them (summer or winter).

Thanks. I've never been up there yet, is the campground along the dead-end road that heads east for about 1,000 feet or further up where the road ends then into the forest? I've seen pics of the parking area when Googling but don't see anything in Google Earth that looks like a parking area (imagery is from June timeframe, still lots of snow and can't zoom in far enough to make it out). thx.

The loos are right here . I'm impressed by your prior planning!

People camp all over the place beside their cars. I've not been way past the final hairpin. In summer, cars wind up alongside the road past the second switchback. It's a busy place after melt-out.

ah, ok, thanks, much appreciated. Google Earth's depiction of the road up there is rather whacked and it also shows what is part of the trail as being road. I've looked at on-line topo maps previously but it wasn't as clear as the one you provided, thanks.

Yes, lots of planning to the point of being anal about it since it could end up being a solo climb if there aren't others going up over Memorial Day weekend and tag along with them for safety reasons. I'll be flying in from North Carolina (lived in Seattle area until I was 24) and this is also training for a Rainier summit attempt next year (I did 14,110 ft Pike's Peak last summer, although that wasn't alpine conditions, obviously). I could go later in June but would rather be able to ski as far down as possible and I like the challenge of it anyway. Let me know if anyone is interested in going Memorial Day weekend, just be prepared for a 5+ mile slog just to get to Morrison Creek that time of year and another 1.5 miles mostly cross-country to Cold Springs, avoiding all the switchbacks (or take the longer 3 mile road if you want). After a night at Morrison Creek or Cold Springs, depending on how long of a slog in it is, I'll head up a route just east of Crescent Glacier due to possible cornices / avy conditions on the traditional route that time of year and camping out around 9300 ft on the eastern side of Lunch Counter, summit the next day and ski down the SW Chutes down to Morrison Creek campground and out.

If we get a stormy Memorial Day weekend (seems we do at least 50% of the time) then the challenge will be finding something else to do that weekend.  I went third week of June last year and was able to easily ski down to the Round the Mountain trail, which makes it easy to hike back to the campground, rather than skiing lower and navigating through the woods.  I think your chances of a weather window are much better three weeks later.  Also you will for sure be able to drive all the way to CS campground then and if high pressure is hanging around you will have company and you can travel light and make this a day trip.  If you do come Memorial Day weekend and you hit a window of high pressure, you will not want for company.
