PNG files use lossless compression (the restored image is identical to the image before it was compressed), so you don't end up with compression artifacts (e.g. blockiness along edges in a photo) like you do with jpgs.
They're usually much larger files than jpgs - especially for photos... but they may be smaller for simple images like you would have on a T-shirt.

Kam, sign me up for a couple. The kids back in Utah will be jealous. Isn't that the logo from pinheads from hell, neptune mountaineering in Boulder on the back???
I know this is tele specific, but maybe a caption like "3 pin grin"
