the better late season volcano?? was created by dfhkvs
I've done hood and adams like 3 times each. Got a friend coming to visit from the east coast 1st week of July. He's adamant that he must ski a volcano while here. That feels late to me for Hood (ski descent), and also a tad late for Adams? I have typically done those peaks Mar - May.
Any thoughts on which would be better? With Adams, I assume it'd be a longish hike, but that the SW chutes would still be pretty primo.
Any musings would be welcomed, thanks.
Dave.

That should be about the right time to do the Emmons side of Rainier if you have the glacier training & experience for the upper mountain.

N side Adams has more serious routes but usually holds up until then. Not sure it will this year, however. Rainier is a good idea, or Baker, too.

Long distance visual from The Gorge/Hood River area - North side of Hood and South of Adams look about 4-6 weeks ahead of normal melt schedule based on the amount of black versus white. (But much better than last year)

First time I skied the SW chutes was
July 29, 2007
. This year is melting faster. If memory serves, the route was skinnable from the Crescent to the summit then.
July 8, 2008, St. Helens was still fun, but that was a big year.
July 18, 2010 , SW Chutes skied great.
N side of Adams is usually primo that time of year, if freezing levels are high enough, but every route is consequential and generally inappropriate for a first volcano ski.
Even the south side of Adams is mind-expanding for an east-coaster. It was for me.
