I came across a link to this video & website that previews a new tool for rapidly assessing layers in a snowpack. It started out with a group from MIT but they've got a lot of outdoor "experts" consulting and guiding their development. It's a costly tool ($1400 pre-order; $2400 retail) so it's geared towards pros (guides, ski patrol, avy forecasters, etc) but, if their vision comes together, it could provide A LOT of information!
