Beta on Broken Top, Bachelor or the South Sisters was created by thatoneguydave
Hey awesome community of back country skiers,
Looking to see if anyone has any beta on Broken Top, Bachelor, or the South Sisters. I'm heading down for the fourth of July to enjoy Bend, Beer, and the volcanoes. Just going to be doing one day trips and looking for any information to help plan my trip.
Thanks,
David J

Skied Bachelor today - five to six minutes to skinnable snow (last week could ride to the car). East face was excellent corn and the Cirque bowl is holding up well also. Should be good when you're there, but it will go fast in the next couple weeks. Supposed to be hot during the week....
Here's a picture w/Broken Top in the background to give you an idea as to southside conditions.....

I skied bach on the 30th. Great corn, to within 200 feet of the Sunrise Lot. This despite the rather transparent official excuse of "Not enough snow to open for the 4th of July" the skiing was great. Of course we all know the "offical excuse" is just a smoke screen. The real reason being being to provide ever more money to keep all the Salt Lake lawyers dancing on the head of a pin. Oh yea, and when they are finally done wiping up that mistake..... to build condos where they don't belong.

Skied Bach Butte again on the 6th. Ski-able snow now a thousand feet from the Sunrise parking lot. This time we skied the Bowl. It is starting to look thin up in the Pinnacles with a large fumarole vent hole forming to the east of the largest of the Pinnacle rocks.
On another note a friend skied South Sister on the 5th. They hit consistent snow at Moraine Lake where they camped the night prior. She reported a great day of skiing from the summit.

So I went down for the weekend and ended up skiing Bachelor. I thought the descent may be a better line than off of broken top for the amount of time required. I did a quick recon of the road to access the Broken Top Trailhead from Todd Lake and it's still closed. I imagine due to the amount of snow in the lower elevations still.
Anyways. Went up Bachelor out of the Sunrise parking lot using the road to get to the summit chair and then put on the skins from there. Made it up in a leisurely two hours follow by skiing just to skiers right of the chair and then down I-5. If you take I-5 down you can get to about 100 vertical feet of the base and then you can just walk to Sunrise lodge. It took a few carries or walks on rocks/dirt, but I imagine that line will melt out by the end of this week.
Love the Bend, OR area for it's volcanoes, beer, rivers, and the outdoor scene.
