I like toploaders:

. Carries well, ski specific, back access, shovel pocket, etc. I think I paid only $75 for mine, though.

Cilo Gear 30Z. I picked one up last summer and fits your requirements to carry skis, pickets, axe, etc and does it good.
Made in Portland too.

I also use the poacher. Pretty beefy pack but compresses down pretty well, and has multiple carry options (A-frame, diagonal, and snowboard).

I am a big fan of the Osprey Variant series, I have the 37L and the 52L. they are not a super lite pack, but not heavy either. Another important component of Osprey, it their costumer service, they are completely committed to taking care of you, no matter what it takes. The 37 works for me as a day pack, and the 52 is more than enough for multi day trips. I actually prefer the 52, for some reason it fits me better, and can be squeezed down nicely when you are skiing. I wore one completely out and I am now working on it's replacement. They make several sizes, so if you can go somewhere where you can try them on.

I've been pretty happy with my Lowe Alpine - Alpine Attack.
