I have done a lot of epoxy/ boat work in the last 20 years. Over a large number of those years I have cleaned work surface with acetone to remove oil. In the last few years the manufacturers have begun to state that cleaning with acetone before applying epoxy is not a good idea. Now they recommend that you use alcohol. I am not sure why they changed but they have.

I would suspect that they are mostly changing the recommendation for long term health / liability reasons. Acetone is pretty good at slowly poisoning people through the skin and causing incremental sensitivity... kind of like epoxy. Main reason I suggested that that over the alcohol is because of all the fun games many of us play with waxes and sprays while playing the anti-snow on top sheet game. Also road grime and it chemical who knows what.
