I struck backcountry gold!!! Last week, I toured a prominent Cascade volcano on a bluebird day within Portland city limits and had fresh tracks all day long. 'What? How is this possible? For one, the freezing level has been well above the city for weeks, and besides that, no such place even exists unless you're counting Mt. Tabor or something ridiculous like that.' I can understand what you might be thinking, but I have proof, observe (below).
My short, yet challenging ascent up the steep draw and then the unforgiving vertical face (no skins, crampons, or ice ax needed) was rewarded with amazing views of the glacial formations that were laid out before me. The pristine cirque bowl I was about to drop into was hardpacked and windblown, but smooth as butter allowing supreme, bomber edging for the seemingly endless turns that I envisioned. Throughout the cirque were windblown cornices that could allow one to blast huge airs onto perfect steep pitches. Not only that, there was a protruding ridgeline which formed a spine offering  numerous lines of attack. Indeed, the options were numerous and epic, and I was pumped.
I took several runs that day, each one seeming better than the last. Without a doubt, this Portland-based volcano rode consistently without any fear of avalanche. I've recently been hearing about how the backcountry has been really sketchy lately (mainly ice and/or lack of snow). If this is so, try visiting your local skatepark; you might get stoked.

Nice shots!

Pads but no helmet? I busted my elbow and it took many months to recover, glad it wasn't my head, though...

If nehmerstory sees you at a skatepark on rollerblades he'll kick your ass, if alta sees you on a snowboard, they just ask you to leave...

Nice post Jason! Lets see a Ching Ching.
