In the right conditions, ski crampons can be indispensable; seems like we use them more every year. Practice with them before using them in spooky situations, so you know their limits.

again thanks for all the info and also Amar's post about the blue foam pads that he improvised. Snow is on the way tonight and the change is coming for the new year and the real onset of winter.

When you need them they really help. And best of all your friends will hate you when you have no problems with the icy slopes and they forgot theirs at home.

toured sidecountry today and really could have used them but was on my marker barons for resort and the side world. Conditions were pretty good for skiing the steeps at 6300 ft on ENE aspects with wind drift snow of about 4 to 5 inches and very stable conditions (4 to 5 inches over a light crust with nice consolidation beneath. The crust could be something to remember for the future depending on conditions and new evaluation.
