Actually, I am not so fascinated by the use of an airbag, but that this person was buried by what looks like a thirty foot slide (the report says 100 feet).  The small ones will get you.  Apparently, the rescuers knew she was going to be in trouble.  The bag let her get buried only one foot, instead of five feet.
