Touring in Utah? was created by Jonn-E
I'm unexpectedly getting sent to Utah for work tomorrow, where it is currently dumping. Utah Avalanche Center doesn't have much info beyond advisories, and the a quick google shows a quiet Internet. I found a Snotel site at 9,000' in Big Cortonwood showing 17" currently.
Questions: is that enough to tour there? Are people getting after it yet down there? Is there a forum somewhere that the locals post? (Obv would prefer to find a partner)
AKA, should I schlep my crap on the plane for the mythical SLC dawn patrol?

Does this help?
www.wasatchsnowinfo.com/
It was thin when I was there for work 2 weeks ago. The ski areas were barely open on man made snow and they have not had a ton of snow since then. If the storm is going to keep up for a couple days and you're there for the week.....then maybe? I think its 50/50 but that's just my POV.
On partners, I have not found a good way of solving that problem when I visit SLC. But I have lucked into touring with folks I met at the trail head who turned out to be very solid - its not the best plan, but that area has a lot of veteran ski tourers. On two of those occasions I got to tour with local avy forecasters out for a morning jaunt....maybe I was at risk of an expert halo induced accident, but they sure knew where to ski.

You might try posting on the Utah threads on splitboard.com or TGR. If conditions are relatively safe and coverage is good, across the street from Solitude or up Grizzly Gulch from Alta have easy access, mellow (and very non-mellow) terrain options, and usually lots of people around.

I live in SLC…missing the NW but not the skiing on most days. Feel free to PM me if anyone is in town and wants to tour. I'm always looking for folks to ski with, and it would be especially cool to get out with some Cascadians. If I can't make it out with you Id be glad to point you in the right direction(s).

I appreciate the offer. For me it turned into a sad story: Running short on time and with my ski bag AWOL, I threw in just my ski boots and beacon. I successfully shuffled all the pieces of my trip so that I could get in the quintessential Wasatch dawn patrol on Fri morning. Except on Thursday night no one in Salt Lake City would rent me touring gear due to "coverage issues". The employees at the BD store even thought it necessary to tell me how good of a time THEY had skiing recently right after telling me they wouldn't rent me anything. You got some real jerks down there in SLC.
Next time I'm bringing my own gear if it kills me, and I'll be sure and connect with you!
