Patrick Donovan Goldsworthy, Irish-born outdoorsman, conservationist, biochemist, and loving husband died Saturday evening, October 5. His intensive work within the North Cascades Conservation Council (N3C) promoted the establishment of North Cascades National Park.
Born in County Wexford in 1919, Goldsworthy earned his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. As a student he joined the Sierra Club. After service in the U.S. Army and Air Force he moved to Seattle in 1952 to become a biochemistry professor at the University of Washington.
In 1956 he was elected a board member of Olympic Park Associates and in 1958 became president of N3C. He became a trustee of the National Parks and Conservation Association in 1966. During the same year he received the Sierra Club's William E. Colby Award for outstanding leadership, dedication and service to the Sierra Club.
In 1969 he was appointed to the North Cascades National Park Master Plan Team, sole citizen member of the team that planned for the park and the Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas. That year he was also named an honorary life member of The Mountaineers.
In his capacity as appointee to the North Cascades Advisory Committee in 1969, he helped plan for the Pasayten Wilderness and the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Later he was involved in the successful effort to prevent construction of High Ross Dam, and was appointed by the mayor of Seattle to the Skagit Environmental Endowment Commission, a U.S.-Canadian commission charged with enhancing recreational opportunities and protecting environmental resources within the Canadian and U.S. watershed of the Skagit River.
He also has been instrumental in establishing such areas as the William O. Douglas Wilderness and the Norse Peak Wilderness, and the Boulder River, Chelan-Sawtooth, Henry M. Jackson, Mt. Baker and Noisy-Diobsud Wilderness areas.
Goldsworthy is survived by his wife of 35 years, Christine; stepchildren Catherine Kroll (Joern), Teresa White, Patrick White (Mary), Melissa Bosworth (Tim), and Christopher White. He was predeceased by his first wife, Jane Holmes Goldsworthy and his daughter, Katharine Anne Goldsworthy.
There will be a memorial service later in the year.

There was a nice profile of him in the 1969 Mountaineer Annual, when he was named an honorary member of the club. I have a brief note here:

A portrait of Patrick D. Goldsworthy, president of the North Cascades Conservation Council, who spearheaded the effort to create the park. His dedication to the cause earned him the nickname "Mr. North Cascades" among his peers, the press and public officials. The article includes a photo of Goldsworthy shaking hands with President Lyndon B. Johnson at the reception for the signing of the North Cascades Act.

Pat Goldsworthy was a giant of Northwest conservation and a very nice man, based on my few encounters with him.
