I had my hip replaced on January 8, 2013, with the anterior approach (I'm 53 years old). My surgery was in the morning, I was walking around the nurse's station that afternoon, and stayed one night in the hospital. My pain level was level 1-2 in the hospital, and I was off prescription meds after two weeks (I was highly motivated to get off them because I wanted to drink beer). After abouth a month, I started physical therapy, and my biggest downfall was trying to do too much too fast. When I pushed too hard on my exercises, it would set me back a couple of weeks. I was back on skis April 21, 103 days after surgery, and on May 4, I was making tele-turns down a black diamond slope at HooDoo (not recommended by my therapist, but I just had to follow TeleMurray). It's been over 8 months since surgery and my hip still hurts, but my life is a lot better since. I think if I dedicate myself to really strengthening the hip/leg/body, I'll be all right, but time will tell if I really get back to the way I was. I've only had one fall since surgery, while playing tennis, and it was a little scary but nothing bad happened. After my one month visit, the doc said 'no limitations', just be careful, so I took him at his word. There still hasn't been a single day that I don't remember that
I've had a hip replacement, but I hope that day is coming.

Thanks for the tips on resurfacing with DR Pritchett. I did lot's of web research on resurfacing before my visit to my doc at Swedish on 9/19. We talked about it and in the end I asked him if his assistant could help me get in to see DR Pritchett as soon as possible. She got me an appointment for 9/20. Pritchett knows his stuff. He has done hundreds of resurfacing procedures. He took more xrays and concluded that I am a good candidate for resurfacing. He says the metal on metal is a lifetime replacement. If I choose ceramic/poly it will wear it out. He puts the material choice on the patient. He is real a straight talker on the risks and his abilities. He sees no dislocation problems with resurfacing and said I would not have limitations. I am going to schedule the procedure for mid November, likely the metal on metal.

I got to try out my re-surfaced hip yesterday on groomed run skiing at Mission. Only one run had sufficient snow cover but didn't find a rock out on it. After 10 turns or so, things started feeling pretty good and better than the old hip that had pain / deformation. Wondered if it didn't have the sensory feedback like an organic because of the metal on metal so kind of pondered that. Didn't seem to make a difference though. Hard to call skiing a groomer at Mission a test but short, medium, or long turns, all felt good and after a couple runs, opened up some speed. Glad I went with a re-surface & pretty sure I'll ski at or very close to 100%. Putting that left sock on is still some work!
