Award to Fred Beckey and great video was created by garyabrill
I am sure there are many here who know him and many more who know of him and can appreciate his contribution to NW mountaineering. Here is a great video (I found it posted on Cascadeclimbers.com).

Thanks for posting, Gary. He is totally THE MAN. I have bumped into him several times at crags all over the US. The first time was 1978 in the Yosemite Lodge cafeteria, and after 3 minutes of talking he asked us to partner him on "a big unclimbed spire in the desert"....
Now I wish I'd taken him up on it!
Beckey also did some skiing back in the day, such as the 1st descent of Ruth Mountain.
I hope Ad-Didas gave him road-trip cash or something.

Yeah, here's a toast to Fred:
All the movies in the Adidas tribute video are from the Mountaineers Film Collection , now at the University of Washington.
The still photo above (Fred and Les MacDonald near Garibaldi in 1958) is from the Bob and Ira Spring Photographs , also now at UW.
For what it's worth, Fred didn't make the first ski descent of Ruth Mountain. That was done a few years earlier by Dwight Watson, Fred's earliest mentor. Several of the movies in the Adidas video were filmed by Watson.

I saw him in Colorado Springs, the Gunks, the Valley, and Granite Mountain in the late 70s/80s. Twice he was escorting a much younger lady....different one each time....

Oops, I was just going off a passage from Challenge of the North Cascades. Anyway, he skied back when it was tough. For what it's worth, Fred didn't make the first ski descent of Ruth Mountain.
